UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a girl containing several human souls inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Within her reside four separate souls, each with unique fears and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.
Based on revealed footage, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, though additional clips show the main character exploring a desolate chapel.
A World of Individual Dread
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to others can activate something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to every individual."
The core mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these identities will switch against your will during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become amplified and assault the girl in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have large flowers where their necks should be. Flowers are a recurring element, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the body belongs to them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The last one remaining could be a fraud. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
