This Swine Life: Pig Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Leader.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as pardoning holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the beginning of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
The gathering, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, donated by a local firefighter, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people yelling “six-seven” – originating from a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently declared “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Future Secured
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the festive period,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Annually, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and cafecito as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
