Prince Andrew relinquishes his honor as the Duke.

Royal figure under scrutiny
The royal has encountered growing attention over his associations with the financier.

The royal is relinquishing his titles, including the the Duke, he has stated in a individual message.

He has been under increasing scrutiny over his associations with sex offender the financier, with calls for the Palace to take steps against him.

That now seems to have resulted in the royal deciding to of his own accord return his designations and to give up involvement of the Garter Order.

In his message he said he continued to "vigorously dispute the claims against me".

"In consultation with the monarch, and my direct and broader family, we have concluded the continued claims about me take away from the work of the King and the royal household," said a message from Prince Andrew.

"I have decided, as I always have, to put my responsibility to my relatives and nation first.

"I stand by my resolution five years ago to stand back from public life.

"With the King's agreement, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the awards which have been conferred upon me. As I have said previously, I vigorously dispute the allegations against me."

The royal has been involved in a number of issues, including a legal case he ended with the plaintiff, questions about his finances and his involvement with an alleged intelligence operative.

He will stay a royal - but will stop to be the the Duke, a title received from his mother, the Queen Elizabeth II.

He had already stopped to be a "active member" and had forfeited the use of his His Royal Highness designation and no longer was seen at public engagements. His position now will be even more diminished.

His ex-wife will be known as Ferguson and no longer York's Duchess, but their offspring will persist to have the designation of princesses.

Prince Andrew has encountered intense attention over his associations with disgraced financier the financier, more recently featuring questions about when he had truly ended communication.

In his television appearance, the royal had said that he had severed all ties with the financier after they had been photographed together in New York in the end of 2010.

But emails sent in early 2011 later came to light indicating that Andrew had in private remained in touch with him, for example sending a note: "Stay in contact and we'll meet again soon!"

There had been increasing annoyance in Buckingham Palace at the scandals that persisted to surround the prince.

Soon a book released after death by the accuser will be released which is expected to bring further focus on his association with the plaintiff and Jeffrey Epstein.
