Offspring of Ex- South African President Jacob Zuma Rejects Terror Accusations as Trial Commences
The daughter of previous South African Leader Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terror-linked accusations at the beginning of her court case in the coastal city of Durban.
The defendant, 43 years old, is being prosecuted over comments she published on social media four years ago during violent protests in South Africa that came after the apprehension of her parent.
A week of disorder in multiple regions of the country in July 2021, including theft and arson, caused at least 300 individuals dead and led to damage worth an projected 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2bn).
Zuma-Sambudla has been charged of encouraging this turmoil and faces charges of provocation to commit terrorism and public disorder.
Context of the Proceedings
The demonstrations were focused in the provinces of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal and were triggered by the previous president's apprehension for disobeying a court order to testify at an probe into claims of graft while he was holding office.
The defendant has consistently rejected the accusations against her, with her lawyer previously calling the state's legal argument as insufficient.
She has also repeatedly claimed the allegations against her were an bid to address political grievances with her parent after he established his own political party and ran against the ANC.
Support and Court Representation
This was supported by the foundation, which said the case was an "misuse of authority" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and kinship harassment" against the former president and his relatives.
A few of supporters from her political organization, the political party, appeared outside the judicial building, while her parent and other party leaders attended the court sessions inside.
The defense has stated that the evidence presented by government lawyers is insufficient and fails to provide substantial proof for a criminal finding.
