Labuschagne Dropped from Australian One-Day International Team to Face India
The Australian selectors have left out Labuschagne from Australia's three-match ODI series versus India, with high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw earning a shock call-up.
Performance Issues Result in Omission
Labuschagne has been omitted from the ODI side after being dismissed for one in each of his two innings during the top-end series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a top score of 47 in his previous ten ODI batting appearances.
The 31-year-old has played 68 ODIs and scored 1,871 runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now focus on earning a Test recall in time for the Ashes beginning in Perth on 21 November.
Renshaw's Return and Team Changes
Labuschagne has shown signs of a improvement in form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw made a hundred for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.
Renshaw is in line to make his ODI debut in the upcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.
Renshaw has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a red-ball recall as Australia look for a answer to their top-order woes.
Pace Additions and Fitness Updates
Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after being rested since starring for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen may earn his ODI debut after suffering a concussion in the build-up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.
ODI captain Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he aims to recover from a back injury by the time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Squad Selection Approach and Fixtures
Australia have selected a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-game T20 series due to a wrist injury sustained in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 teams after smashing a century in the final game against New Zealand to secure a 2-0 series win last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the back end of the series as players get ready for the summer through Sheffield Shield cricket,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an crucial phase in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously get ready certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India starts on 19 October in Perth, before the rivals play five T20 internationals from 29 October.
