Hazbin Hotel's Showrunner Unveils Alastor and Rosie's Origin Tale Is a Major Season 3 Tease
Devoted fans of the show finally got a long-awaited backstory in the second season's episode 4, called “It's a Deal.” This episode will probably spark extensive conversation and pose many inquiries about the nature of a certain demonic Overlord who seems far more powerful than anyone before understood. The new revelations feature a glimpse into the human life of a beloved character prior to his demise and sentence to the underworld.
A Significant Hint for Future Seasons
The series creator shared an inside detail about the episode – it serves as a major tease for season 3. Additionally, she provided further details into the methodology of creating the mortal forms of her demonic animated characters.
Warning: Spoilers for the fourth episode of Hazbin Hotel, the show's second season.
In “It’s a Deal”, a flashback reveals that fan-favorite character Alastor, the Radio Demon was a mass murderer in his mortal days. Knowing full well he was headed to the underworld, he established communication with the afterlife in advance to obtain a strong position there. The charismatic leader, who leads Hell’s cannibal community, vowed Alastor he would become “the strongest Condemned Soul in Hell” in exchange for his eternal spirit.
This raises the question: How is this character sufficiently strong to raise Alastor above every other Demonic Sinners?
“The Rosie and Alastor deal is the initial building block in a much bigger story that involves so much, leading into season 3,” the showrunner states. “Obviously that is an excellent question: How is she so strong? The answer could be many things, but the revelation is in season 3. I am thrilled for people to see it.”
There’s no telling the duration the audience will have to wait for Hazbin Hotel’s third season. The studios have approved the third and fourth seasons, but the showrunner frequently notes that animated production is a time-consuming endeavor, and subsequent seasons have no release dates yet. Nevertheless, she says holding off on specific information is an important part of keeping the second season's attention in the right places.
“The difficulty of any agreement with infernal beings, or narratives that have enigmas, is giving the audience sufficient clues to be like, Something's up here, and then revealing that gradually, and allowing that be gratifying,” she comments. “So I am quite eager.”
Questions Answered in Season 3
The creator promises that the upcoming season will tackle the questions followers have been posing, such as why the cannibal leader commanded Alastor to disappear for seven years, which weakened his influence in the infernal realm.
“The entire seven-year span, and the deals these humans are doing, and all that — it contributes to a larger story,” she says.
In the meantime, the origin story episode provides a further look into how the core cast of Sinner Demons appeared as as humans, following after viewing another character's historical mortal appearance in the second episode. The creator says that significant consideration went into these character designs.
“The mortal forms of the characters hold so much weight,” she notes. “They range from looking quite distinct from their demon form to seeming almost identical. With the first character, the initial design we see, there was a little bit of a debate internally between choosing something that represents the character, as opposed to selecting an option that's very time-period accurate. We opted for making something that just seemed like it was him.”
She mentions the primary controversy over Pentious’ human design was his long hair: “We were like, ‘No one typically had extended hair like that in that historical period.’ But simultaneously, we think the silhouette is extremely crucial, and we also just thought he looked good. We were like, ‘This seems correct.’ We sort of gave the excuse that he's a hermit, so he just allowed his hair to lengthen. So there is always a solution. As we design the human versions of these characters […] it's such a fun thing to explore and figure out. I am looking forward for fans to see more of the appearances of the human versions.”
