German Right-Wing Setting the Public Narrative, Study Finds
Established parties in power are more and more allowing the far right to dictate the public discourse, as per a new study carried out in Germany.
Researchers discovered that this phenomenon has unwittingly helped radical parties by validating their ideas and disseminating them to a broader audience.
Analysis Based on Two Decades of Media Coverage
The results, released in the European Journal of Political Research, utilized an automated text analysis of more than 520,000 news pieces from a half-dozen German publications.
Capital-based researchers noted that as the radical faction moved from marginal topics in the late 1990s to central themes like integration and immigration, mainstream political groups progressively adjusted their messaging in reaction.
This adjustment boosted the dissemination of these concepts and signaled to the electorate that such stances were legitimate.
Consequences for Democratic Systems
"Political communication by mainstream parties is crucial in the electoral success of the radical right," stated a political sociologist participating in the research.
"This element has been overlooked," she noted.
The effect was evident even when conventional groups were condemning the far right. "They still receive focus," the expert remarked. "Our core argument is that because we live in such a battle for attention, this attention is key."
Mainstreaming Effect Throughout the Continent
While the study was centered around the German context, this mainstreaming phenomenon is likely to apply to nations throughout Europe.
"This is frequently observed in German and British news outlets," said another researcher. "Radical groups says something and everyone begins discussing it for one week."
"Even if you're countering it, you're echoing it," he stated.
Toughening of Public Rhetoric
At times, political figures have also toughened their language to align with that of the far right.
In a recently published interview, a former national leader called for large-scale expulsions and pushed for them to happen "more frequently and rapidly."
Comparable instances can be found across Europe, as elected officials from nations ranging from the UK to France embrace the rhetoric of the radical right, particularly on immigration.
This has created an feedback loop that was inconceivable a ten years prior.
Core Problem: Who Sets the Narrative?
"{If you're a centrist political group and you are talking about cultural issues – immigration, integration – in a way that is determined by the pace of the far right, that's the essence of narrative control," explained a study author.
Some parties have taken additional measures, seeking to copy the strict agenda of the radical right, despite studies indicates that doing so drives the electorate to vote for the radical faction.
Gradual Impact and Public Perception
The scope of data collected revealed that the influence of radical parties had been progressive and had increased over time.
"Voter awareness doesn't change from one day to another," stated a co-author. "However, when you encounter this negative framing around migration every second week, and it is being spread not only by far-right parties but also, for example, by mainstream political organizations, then of course this narrative gains more traction."
Requirement for Established Groups to Carve Out Their Distinct Narratives
The study highlighted the need for established parties to carve out their distinct discourses, especially on subjects such as immigration and integration, rather than constantly trailing after the far right.
"It resembles a choreography," explained one researcher. "When the leader is far-right and you're responding to them, you cannot decide which music should be playing."
